“Another woman said she had been dancing and drinking daiquiris with her 32-year-old sister at the parade when the shots rang out. Four bullets struck her sister’s arm, barely missing other vital areas of her body”

The French did pack up and leave North America in 1763 after the French and Indian War… NOLA still has a French Quarter, but it is not really French. The piece of France that remains in North America is 900 miles up the coast from Mayor Mike — St-Pierre and Miquelon, which ping-ponged back and forth between France and England until 1816, when the islands finally became French territories.
Think of drive-by shootings? Think of Al Capone? From:

” • Rum running. When Prohibition dried out the U.S.’s kegs in the 1920s, Al Capone decided to slake his thirst — and that of the nation — by setting up shop in St-Pierre. He transformed the sleepy fishing harbor into a booming port that hauled in 300,000 cases of alcohol each month. Bottles were removed from their crates, placed in smaller carrying sacks and taken secretly to the U.S. coast by rum runners. The piles of Cutty Sark whiskey crates were so high on the docks, locals used the wood both to build and heat houses. At least one house remains today and is known as the “Cutty Sark cottage,” which most tours drive by. Rum-running artifacts, including Capone’s straw hat, are displayed in the small lobby museum of the Hotel/Motel Robert (011-508-412-419; off the main square).”
Nice peaceful island photo Houston Chronicle in the link above.
My Grand Parents were from St. Pierre & Miquelon. Last time I was there the French were piping in 3 Paris radio stations around the clock (pre-internet). My father was walking along one of the beaches and a geezer stopped him, said,”you’re Eugene’s son, no?” My father didn’t have a striking resemblance to his father – the man said, “you walk just like Eugene…” They have Al Capone’s hat on display from the big money prohibition days.
That’s cool. I have always wanted to visit. Here is a link to the player of the adult contemporary station there
