McMinville Oregon

Hispanic man with knife goes into 7-11 and stabs a college student buying alcohol at a 7-11 at 11 PM, while his buddy with a backpack stays outside (too young to buy his own beer?)

Police respond

After police shoot him 15 times and he is on the ground, they demand he put his hands out. “He’s dead, Jim”

This video shows some of the limits to cameras – while it is high quality video with sound pointing right at the suspect, just as things get crucial, the buddy walks right in front of the camera blocking the camera. Even so, it’s all pretty clear.

What happened here was the officers lost situational awareness. They had a guy bleeding inside the 7-11, EMS had arrived, and they were standing outside the door talking about the situation and how they were going to find the stabber. They had a good description of him.

The stabber (who apparently doesn’t understand English) wanders into the field of view of the camera around 23:15:00. He still has the knife but does nothing aggressive toward the police. The buddy points out to the officers that the killer “is back”. One officer draws his gun even before he sees the suspect. They draw their weapons and all 3 officers start yelling demands he raise his arms, which he does. One officer apparently was getting his taser ready, but things move too fast. The folks at Reason.com point out that police frequently give contradictory orders in a situation like this – one officer will shout “Don’t move” while the other says “get down on the ground”. No matter what you do, you’re dead and the shooting is justified because you didn’t comply.

He’s not black and just an illegal (probably). Perhaps he survives by selling drugs to college students. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Wow! How quickly we can leave this earth. This is scary to say the least. I wonder if he was actually the perpetrator?

Probably so – but since he is dead, police are baffled as to why he snuck up on the guy in the store and stabbed him to death. The description comes over the radio and the victim’s buddy says “there he is”. I can’t see from the video if he is actually holding the knife, but he clearly isn’t “lunging” at the officers. In theory, a knife can be thrown if it’s in his hand – but the first question to ask is – why would he return to the store when it is full of police? His family say he went back to surrender, which seems logical.
