Make a difference … Before you exit

You may have heard by now that, following a performance at the Plaza Live Theater in Orlando Florida by the punk rock band Before You Exit, 22 year old singer Christina Grimmie was shot and killed in a gun free zone. The theater also is a Hula Hoop free zone.

Christina is known for being a contestant on a TV talent show and her YouTube videos. One of the witnesses, a vegan hotdog vendor Named Josh Hall said she was bleeding from the head. The shooter was tackled by Christina’s brother, and allegedly killed himself.

Given the venue and the band, the shooter is more likely a Bernie fan than an NRA member. As of now, there is no information on the shooter or motive other than he had two guns.

This incident brought to my mind the senseless murder of Selena Quintanilla in Corpus Christi, TX a few years ago. Selena was a beautiful, talented singer, with an incredible future ahead of her, cut short by a bullet from the president of her fanclub. I did not, in particular, cared for Selena’s musical genre, but it was indeed a pleasure to see her perform. I met Selena when she was beginning her ascend and she was truly a classy lady.

Shooter was also carrying a hunting knife. It’s a smallish venue – an old downtown movie theater with maybe 600 seats. Security (to the extent it existed) was unarmed. Shooter was 21 years old and from somewhere else in Florida.

Police haven’t figured out a motive yet. She had been appearing with “Before you exit”… In the absence of better information, my original thought was they might have been the target (the band is a local band with a lot of ex-members) and she was the only one accessible after the show. I am not afraid to say I had never heard of her before she was shot

The group’s name and songs are full of references to death and/or suicide. None of the reports I’ve read so far have indicated how many people attended.

    Suspect identified

Kevin Loibl looks closer to 40 than 21. He came from Saint Petersburg by car, or not. A quick search suggests his name’s origin goes to Southern Germany or Switzerland

Grimmie’s YouTube channel is zeldaxlove64. It’s clear from an interview with Ryan Seacrest that playing Nintendo was a very important part of her life. Most of her music work was covers of other people’s songs. She can plan the keyboard but doesn’t sight read music

My initial impression of her from the video message where she was encouraging fans to come to the show… There are (or at least used to be) young girls on YouTube how actively solicit men they don’t know to send them gifts (and encourage other girls to do the same). It’s a very dangerous thing to do.

The venue has an interesting history – it was built in 1965 as a single CinemaScope theater with the wide screen, and rocking chairs. It had a second smaller room which played the same movie using the same film, but an hour later.

As the standalone screen model became unviable, they stayed afloat being the theater that carried Rocky Horror Picture Show. It’s gone through several owners since, and wound up owned by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, who have plans to make it a concert venue. I can’t see that ever happening – the stage and acoustics of a symphony hall are very different than a shallow movie screen with speakers to blast out surround sound from the side. Chamber Music perhaps.

Well, last night’s mass shooting will push this out of everyone’s memory, but the entire staff of The Plaza Live was fired a week ago and replaced by people with no experience

There were lots of people suggesting that the solution at The Plaza Live was more security guards and more pat downs.

The shooter that killed 50 overnight in a gay nightclub was a licensed security guard. Who guards the guards?

If you go to the DuckDuckGo search engine (which I just started using) and search on Loibl, you will see they have decided to censor knowledge
