One soldier was so drunk he couldn’t hit the man he had been assigned to kill. Afterwards, the bodies were stacked in a pile and sprayed with bullets before being tumbled into a mass grave. It marked the beginning of a tragedy that would see the death of over 200, 000 Liberians.

One of the main things that had separated the prosperous west from the rest of the world was “the rule of law”, or a sense of everyone being treated fairly regardless of you network connections. It wasn’t perfect, but far closer to perfect than in the third world.
With the growing spending based on lobbyists and campaign contributions and the tax code complexities to enable special favors, we are losing that. Whether it is Al Gore getting rich on government grants (he does not need to pay back) for global warming, or the President stiffing the GM bondholders to give the company to his union cronies, we have serious problems in our country.

The current woman President is pretty clearly a stooge put in place by the United Nations, IMF and the usual suspects.
The country is making significant progress, although the economy is heavily dependent on international aid and Chinese investment.
Things went off track again because of Ebola. I think I wrote about it at the time. The rapid construction of roads from rural areas to Monrovia had unintended consequences. Ebola infections are self limiting – it is so lethal, a few people get it and die, the spread stops as long as people don’t handle the corpses.
Now with good roads, if someone has symptoms, they rush to the city where the hospital is, spreading the infection and killing the medical personnel. Quarantine is the most effective way to stop infectious diseases. With massive external aid and education, Ebola has passed, but it won’t be the final unintended consequence
