Benghazi to NTC: Where is the Army?

(Russia Times)

The accusation was thrown out all during the “Revolution” in Libya that the military run by the sovereign government of Libya were really “merenaries”, meaning they were being paid to be soldiers – and therefore somehow evil  (the subtext of this was many of those mercenaries were black Africans because Libyans didn’t want to be in the military – and many black residents of Libya have summarily been murdered by the Benghazis).

So NATO “won” the revolution and killed Qadaffi and destroyed most of the infrastructure of the government of Libya.   The banks of Europe are not wiling to release the funds they still hold for Libya, despite everyone now agreeing that Benghazi’s NTC is the government of Libya.

Where is the Army?   NATO and the NTC killed them all.    Training and equipping a military costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time and trust in the government.   Former membes of the Army have been murdered, presumed to not be loyal to the new government, so they’re not going to volunteer their prior experience.

So independent militias not under the control of the government throw up roadblocks randomly and assert control over portions of the country for whatever their individual motivations.  Welcome to Somalia

I’m shocked, I tell you.

Kuwait has told President Obama “No Thanks” to his generous offer to move the 40,000 troops evacuating Iraq into bases in Kuwait.    Perhaps the NTC would allow the US to temporarily house troops in Libya if the price was right…
