You could have missed it, but the Southern Baptist Convention just elected its first Black President. I’ve suggested before that this could be a great opportunity to peel away religious black Americans fed up with Barack Obama and his Marxist fellow travelers in the White House – not by trying to buy votes by giving away “more government stuff” but by going to very basic principles of right and wrong.
It only took a few sentences to burst my bubble.
“Well, no, no. I’m a man of the book. I believe in the word of God. I believe in the Bible. And God has specifically spoken about marriage. Marriage is between a man and a woman. You know, that’s biblical.”
So which Bible are you reading?
Pick up your Gideon Bible and open it to Judges 8:30
http://bible.cc/judges/8-30.htm (King James version)
“And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.”
Gideon wasn’t just some obscure Hebrew citizen – he was one the Judges of the Hebrews who communicated directly with God, interpreted God’s law and is a Saint of the Catholic Church.
It’s pretty clear the Bible says that marriage is between a man and women – not men and men and women and women – but it in no way .will you find the Bible saying “Marriage is between a man and a woman”
http://creation.com/does-the-bible-clearly-teach-monogamy
makes the best case possible that Christianity teaches monogamy because a few passages talk about wife rather than saying “wife or wives”.
It would be 1000 more years after Jesus before Jewish rabbis would outlaw polygamy.
I’m not advocating polygamy, but this notion that monogamy is “Biblical” is just completely wrong. People just make up stuff “The Bible says [x]” because they know that most people won’t challenge them – not to mention the United States is not founded on Christian law, no matter how hard Glenn Beck squeezes the compass of George Washington.
If followers of a religion refuse to perform marriages in the church for whatever the reason, or kick people out of their religion for getting divorced – that’s religious freedom – but governments are not religions and the legal system of the United States is based on laws passed by our Representatives, not something God whispered to someone in a dream 2500 years ago and the “emanations from a penumbra” that a Southern Baptist preacher tells his congregation in the revival tent.
It’s been a long time since iv’e read the scriptures, and can’t remember which book it’s in or the exact verse, but, it does say: A preacher is to be the Husband of One Wife. Wouldn’t that be one Man one Woman ? and not polyagamy ? It would also mean not Adam and Steve or Ann and Eve as well .. So if WE… not just (clergy) in the words of Jesus are to..* go forth and be fishers of men,* ( teach the gospel to other’s ) I would tend to believe that would cover meaning of both.
You are correct – but as you point out, that was only for the leaders of the Hebrew people. One of the things that trouble me is the way folks treat the Old Testament. When it is useful, it is the absolute infallible word of God. When it is uncomfortable, the Old Testament is merely historical context and the New Testament is the only part that you really have to pay attention to.
I don’t want Islam running the world, but I do admire that they actually live according to their religion.
I believe marriage issues should be left up to
*shock face* the states… If a state wants gay marriage
then let them do it, if a state does not then it does not.
Lets the people vote.. Or have put it on a national ballot
and have the whole country vote on it.. What gets me
is that some of the same people saying pot legalization should be left up to the states
are also saying that the marriage issues should not be.. That makes no sense..
The sticking point is that the Constitution (especially after the 14th amendment) requires states to honor each other’s laws. So if a couple gets married in Massachusetts and then move to Oklahoma, sooner or later that couple will wind up in an Oklahoma Court being asked to make decisions about laws they didn’t write, like how do you divide up properly in a divorce. If two men get divorced, does one get alimony? The end game of Gay Marriage is going to be the erosion of laws that were in place to protect wives and their children. To many the perfect human society would be women raising children by themselves dependent completely on the government for food, housing and protection, with males only being sperm donors. Oh wait, I just described public housing projects – and factory farms to raise chickens.
If dem queers wanna be hitchin d’er wagons together, like da anus to da wee wee, dey be doin’, I say let dem sissies join up like real human beings do.
Amen.
Please don’t troll here. It won’t get you very far.
