A man who has worked in market surveillance for NASDAQ – the group that watches for trades that indicate insider trading or other improper behavior – used his position of trust and knowledge of the system to acquire really valuable “inside” information, and then bought stocks before news announcements and sold the stock after it went up. He used an account in his wife’s name and entered the trades using his company computer (having worked there, I know that all Internet traffic is logged and retained indefinitely for investigations). He made about $750,000 from this scheme.
