So, we couldn’t import potatoes from Mexico previously? I suppose my concern would be the sanitary conditions of these tubers. I am not sure “phytosanitary” covers enough of the possibilities for contamination.
Note that it also requires spraying with anti sprouting chemicals. If Mexican potatoes just started sprouting, before long the entire United States will be covered in them, and kudzu will become an endangered species.
If I hadn’t moved back to NC, my second choice was a condo near a major junction of rail lines in a suburb of Chicago. The town is largely light industrial and with a decidedly Mexican character, which appeared to be fairly recent. There was a Mexican grocery store across the street that would be the only one within walking distance. It was a fascinating experience. The back wall was the butcher, and reminded me somewhat of the butcher shop in the grocery store as a child. The butcher was busy cutting meat by hand behind the display case – meat was hanging in the open air, unrefrigerated. If you think hamburger is made by a patty machine that is fed soybeans, this sent you back to the reality that meat is dead animals.
Needless to say, the store had tons of things that I have no idea what they are, mostly imports from Mexico. Prior to these new government rules, were illegal potatoes being smuggled into the US and hidden from government view within Mexican neighborhoods? It seems likely.
Where is the Idaho lobby? Next thing you know they will be importing the real original Coca Cola made with cane sugar rather then corn syrup. That was the real thing.
Coca Cola from Mexico with Cane Sugar is readily available in the United States in bottles at high prices. I have been drinking Pepsi Throwback for the last year, which is an indication of my opposition to HFCS – I’ve been a religious coca cola consumer all my life. Throwback is not available in NC, but you can go south of the border to South Carolina (maybe 10 miles) and you can find all the throwback you want.
My liver thanks me. I can tell a significant difference.
Ever wonder why the obamacare proponents like to cite cost of healthcare in the US compared to other countries and never show a graph comparing health of HFCS countries (where importing cane sugar is taxed so much that it is much more expensive than the world price) to those that do not use HFCS?
What about a chart showing how much doctors are paid per office visit per country? Or cost of a medication in countries where they are over the counter versus by prescription only?
The “real” Coca Cola actually had cocaine in it. It was originally one of those “miracle” tonics. Now that would be an interesting venture! Let me see at $x per gram and y grams per bottle – that would make Coca Cola about $32 a bottle 🙂
The current Coca Cola still has coca in it – that is what gives it it’s unique flavor. Coca Cola had been the only company licensed by the US government to import coca as the drug war ramped up in the late 1980s… they made an attempt to remove the coca with their “new coke” in 1985 but sales plummeted.
To be clear, the current Coca Cola does not have cocaine in it like the first versions did. The cocaine is extracted and sold to pharmaceutical companies for medicinal uses (mainly nose surgery) in the United States.
