Another AM radio pioneer goes dark

These days, the land and the tower are worth much more than the radio station.   WDOD-AM was started in 1925 and ceased operations June 1st and is turning in the license to the FCC.   It was a 5 kW day/night station in Chattanooga (choo choo), Tennessee.    At the end, it was running Fox Sports – one of those formats you stuff on an AM station you wish you no longer owned.   One of the 3 towers was destroyed by wind in 2007.   Keeping an AM station running can get very expensive – according to the story above, the equipment is very old (translation:  everything is analog, and the transmitter is using tubes you can only find in a museum)
