Stephens College in Columbia Missouri joins a growing list of colleges that see no reason to operate a “real” college radio station. A “real” radio station subject the school to FCC fines, musical licensing lawsuits, require a budget and faculty advisor and offer nothing you can’t do with an on campus streaming server using the college network.
These stations generally get purchased by the local PBS conglomerate or sold/given to religious broadcasters.
This deal involves $50k purchase + $50k of sponsorship over the next 5 years to promote the college on the larger KBIA. Nothing has been filed yet with the fCC, however. Stephens College has around 1,000 students, none of whom are male unless they are transgendered.
