Server problems….

For those who are doing the volunteer thing, the server is currently returning all servers as “invalid”. Not sure if this is temporary – in retrospect it may be that I’ve been hitting the whois API with too many requests and am being blocked. So as far as I know, the entire internet hasn’t vanished.

Hopefully it goes away – being able to lookup IPs is useful. Perhaps I banned something I shouldn’t have 🙂

    Website trivia for those web geeks out there…

    I log web activity into a database to do things like detect bots that haven’t announced themselves as bots. Each IP address creates a record in a table
    MariaDB [tracking]> select min(lastvisit) from ipcount;
min(lastvisit)
2013-06-10 22:05:33
    1 row in set (0.32 sec)

    MariaDB [tracking]> select count(*) from tracking.ipcount;
count(*)
936617
    1 row in set (0.00 sec)

    June 2013 was the last time I cleaned out the table, which has grown to over 1 GB is size – so computers attached to 936,617 different IP addresses have requested at least one page in a bit less than two years

    Cheap web hosting may be worth what you pay for it 🙂 I noticed problems with DNS lookups over the weekend happening randomly. I rebooted the server and it found a new DNS server and that seemed to clear up the problem for now.
