The story was odd to start with – an adult woman reported to police that her 49 year old mom who is 9 months pregnant had vanished.
The other shoe that dropped was today was that the daughter has a wife.

I’m beginning to wonder if Mom was implanted with an egg from her daughter to be a surrogate mom so her daughter doesn’t get stretch marks. Another quirky thing is her daughter stipulates Mom is driving around in a car with expired Kansas plates…
Is Jerry Springer still on TV? Could Caitlyn Jenner get pregnant?
Apparently none of the reporters thought it useful to read about her “disease” that required a C-section

The disease is hereditary – this may well have been a self diagnosis from watching TV. Nothing in the description says it creates a risk in labor. Since it is hereditary, the evidence would suggest otherwise.
Mom was found today in Boone, up in the mountains after she used an ATM card. So far, there is no indication of foul play or criminal intent.
Except that the police got involved, I’m almost wondering if this was a prank played on TV reporters. Maybe she wasn’t even pregnant…
I know nothing about these people or about this case, but I didn’t read anything to lead me to consider it a prank. Instead I thought that perhaps one or more of the people involved might be undergoing an emotional crisis or have some type of mental illness. It is more common than most people realize and leads to irresponsible and/or irrational behavior.

Let me provide a hint of motive. North Carolina is very restrictive about who can get Medicaid. A 49 year old woman with no minor children who isn’t disabled is not eligible for Medicaid UNLESS she answers “is it possible you might be pregnant?” in which case NC is forced to provide Free medical care. Having an expired out of state license plate is a hint at her sense of social responsibility.
The clerk at the CVS store where she was found said “she didn’t look pregnant”. The main two explanations for that would be that she was never pregnant, or she was pregnant and gave birth and gave away the baby. She is in the hospital for observation but nobody there is allowed to say anything.
The little detail about the daughter having a wife seems to have vanished. Other accounts suppressed the detail that her van had an expired Kansas plate.
It’s a little bit interesting that in the absence of a criminal case, the police were able to locate her immediately when using her ATM card.
The family is now unwilling to confirm she is actually pregnant. She has been admitted to a second hospital. It’s hard to get a doctor to do a C section on a non-pregnant woman. Medical Privacy laws probably made it hard for police to figure this out.
