Random Pope thought of the day

The Pope is speaking out against the death penalty today on his visit to America.

If the Roman Empire had outlawed the death penalty 2000 years ago, how would the world be different today?

I suspect it would be vastly different. The Roman Empire was the last successful empire on Earth. They didn’t get there by kissing babies and making nice with their enemies. Hey Barack – did you ever study history?

      Would Christianity exist?

Interesting question. The answer is just simply being in the right place at the right time. With the conversion of Constantine the Roman Church went from persecuted to persecutors as the Bishop of Rome gained ascendancy, becoming the powerful regime that ushered the Dark Ages and the corruption that ensued.

Another possibility, if the Bible is to be believed, would be Paul’s preaching toward the Greek world (and eventually Roman), rather than Asia as mentioned in the Book of Acts.

One thing for sure, the world would have been far more advanced today had there been no religion, but that’s a pipe dream.

If the national archives can be believed, Jefferson believed that Paul and everything credited to Paul was fraudulent, created by the Romans to create a religion to maintain control over their empire. He believed that the resurrection and miracles were embellishments added by the Roman church to make the religion more acceptable to cultures that liked spirit worship and magic.

Jefferson studied languages extensively and probably has reasons behind his opinions, but stating them loudly in public would have had consequences.

However, Jefferson was only one founding father, and played only a minor role in the adoption of the Constitution.

The logical follow up question – if Jesus had lived to a healthy old age and the religion didn’t take hold – would Islam have happened at all? Or would it have swept over all of Western Europe 1300 years ago? Without the Crusades, would Europe have avoided the plague?
