ICANN just officially approved the creation of new generic Top Level Domains. If you have $165,000 for the application and can run your own domain registration, you can be in business. Instead of just .com, .org, .gov or country codes, the final part of a URL http:// name can be anything.
Who will you be able to trust? How much control does this take away from the US government to shut down things it wants to isolate?

(a TLD can have a default server)

If you have 200k and the smarts to pull it off, you could make a lot of money 🙂
(Just to be clear, I’m not saying anyone is going to create a .radio TLD or that CBS would pay for one for KDKA….. but it would make finding radio stations a lot simpler 🙂
ICANN should be renamed to ICANN’T. As in, “I cannot find where on Earth they bulk-transferred all my domains” …after they de-accredit a registrar for not paying ICANN’s ransom and -auction- all the names to a ‘qualified’ registrar in India.
Oh, your domain expires next week and you can’t find it? Good luck with that…
What? Your registrar was working just fine and located right here in the USA? Tough! ICANN will lock all the domains and transfer them without notifying you… worst of all, they claim they do this to protect registrants (but never offer the option to transfer to a new registrar of your choosing before they grab your domains).
Hell, they don’t even email the domain admin/owner of the change, even though they have all the contact information for your dozens (if not hundreds) of domain names.
Want to see the leechers and moochers of Atlas Shrugged in real-life? Go look at the staff photos of ICANN and you’ll see them, complete with diverse African head-gear.
Who gets the $165,000 fee? ICANN. What do you get for it? Headaches.
The ICANN organization embodies the quintessential bureaucrat: they create the rules, demand the fee, then throw up their hands and deny all accountability… just look at where they tell you to go with almost any domain issue or problem.
Something tells me there are going to be some big scams and rip-offs with this latest ‘approval’ and ICANN will deny any responsibility for the ensuing chaos they create.
Without a doubt. I was already pondering the possibilities. With a suitably shady operator and some cleverness, phishing scams just have a brand new venue – not to mention an infinite source of business for the domain dispute resolution business.
So in a year, there are 1000 different TLDs… so lets say someone creates “.sucks”
as in http://glennbeck.sucks/
and the registrar is say…. ethiopia and doesn’t have a working phone.
Let the wars begin!
