The death of phone polling

A blurb this morning mentioned one of the pioneers in political polling is giving up. The reason is – because it is impossible to do any more. Only 10% of people will answer their phone and answer the questions.

I think most people are also catching on that the purpose of the polls is not to find out what you think, but to do a “push poll” to structure questions to back you into a corner. Add in the government putting everything you say and do into a database, it’s no wonder people claim to “know nothing” when asked by a stranger.

No matter how much you rebalance or weight a sample, you cannot make “people who actually answer a phone” into a statistically valid sample. I think this is excellent news. The only poll that should matter is the one on erection day.
