Polka Music in Texas

Another AM station that died and apparently came back to life recently in Gonzales, Texas. Gonzales is east of San Antonio.

Demise of KCTI

It’s not as odd as it sounds, since accordions are a key part of Northern Mexican music. Over time, the border between Germany , Czechoslovakia and Poland has moved around a bit. I’m not so sure how the accordion came into use in Mexico. Maybe there was a really cute accordion sales woman 😉

The accordion came thru Argentina where they call it “bandoneon” and it form part of the Tango music. Possibly due to the Germans and Italians (the concertina) migrating to Argentina at the end of the 19th Century. As the tango spread north it brought the instruments which then were utilized in their local music, a Mexican Polka.

Vicente Fox’s grandfather was a German from Cincinnati who moved to Mexico to live with his wife. George Romney’s parents fled to Mexico to avoid persecution of Mormons who practiced polygamy. Just imagine if we had a wall that kept Americans from leaving.
