In July 2010, User CommiesAreBad created a poll asking people to compare President Obama’s policies to famous movies. About a week later, they duplicated the poll with the main difference being using the Obama / BP sunflower picture that Parrott enjoys so much.

While the “security” to prevent duplicate voting is not all that tight, the pattern of votes does not explain the 5x difference in response rates.
Theories?

The biggest factor would be the ‘meme’ at the time, with the BP symbol in the news.
Color and contrast attract the eye. The title is different, so that is another factor. (A proper test of advertising response rates would only alter one component at a time.)
The original photo is the typical head-shot to which 50% of us have developed a negative response (aversion)… whereas the revised poll characterizes him in as a ‘talking head’.
I agree with The Chairman but I think the aversion is a bit higher than that. Personally, I see it and I have to take a sub-lingual nitroglycerine. The one with the BP sunflower has a clownish look to it. Obama being the clown prince fits perfectly in it. Just needs a bit more help to visualize the finished pic.
The title doesn’t normally appear – you only see it if you “browse all polls”. I don’t know how many people vote from there vs just the random poll.
Most visitors here are because of conservative talk radio. Any poll with a picture of President Obama gets a higher response rate even if the poll has nothing to do with him.
Pure art reveals the true image.
