CFL Recycling Day!

Not wanting to be subjected to the hazmat suit process that Glenn Beck got when he “broke” a CFL bulb, I decided to be a responsible citizen and return my burnt out CFL bulbs so the environment would not be contaminated with the minuscule amount of mercury inside.

Here is my experience – your mileage may vary. After looking up recycling locations on the government website:

Local bulb and battery store
– sure, we’ll take them off your hands if you pay us $.25 each!

Lowes – after transferring to the correct person
“Hi, I need to recycle some CFLs and the government web site says Lowe’s will take them”
I don’t know what that means…
“CFLs are those Curly Q light bulbs that you have to recycle”
We don’t do that – all we take is Compact Fluorescents
“CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lighbulbs”

Home Depot – after enduring a long promotional message in Spanish
“Hi, i need to recycle some burnt out CFLs”
What type?
“2 curly Q and one spotlight that you use in the ceiling”
No problem
“Any charge or anything I need to know?”
Nope. Come on over
[drive to home depot] – go to guy at the door
“Hi I am here to recycle CFLs. Where do I go?”
I can do that! Let me see what you have
[Takes bulbs out of the Walmart bag]
You’re good to go!
“Thank you for your help!”

  1. I can’t recall a bad experience with the Despot. It really doesn’t deserve the nickname I just used!

  2. Parrott says:

You got to love the ‘drones’ they hire at Lowes.
GlAD you had explained what CFL was, cause when I saw the headline I went Canadian Football League.
But, in defense to my ‘duh ‘ moment, I had been listening to ‘spaceman’ on CFMJ when I read that. Saturday night, I try to catch his show. I miss it more in the summer or just catch the end. I’d like to find a program that I could record it and play at a different time.
    Have a good one
