It’s a reunion because the Chicago Tribune used to own the New York Daily News.
Newspapers didn’t foresee their ad / circulation decline and have massive unfunded pension and other guarantees promised to keep the unions happy. Now they are playing the game of “pass the liability” and trying to dump it all on the government Pension Guaranty Corporation
I don’t know one person that buys newspapers. I am an ex-newspaperboy and remember when people told me that the ads paid for the articles and that charge for the paper paid for the delivery costs (including the ink and paper.) Now the delivery costs are almost free and they are still not making money.
It’s competition at work. In the old days, you had the option to read only one or two newspapers where ever you lived. Now I read papers from Silicon Valley to keep up with tech news, and papers from the UK because I like how they punctuate their sentences. 😉
