Mark Scott might be smiling in heaven, if he had believed in it

Mark Scott was a truly unique talk radio host.   He was heard on WXYT-AM in Detroit (the area, not the city).   Mark was a follower of the Ayn Rand’s religion of Objectivism.   He was also a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment and the 10th amendment.

Back in the early days, WXYT was owned by ABC – and was the source of some of the national programming on early syndicated radio.   In 1984, ABC sold the station because the national ownership limits were still in place – they sold it to a local owner named Fritz Broadcasting.    When the merger frenzy started, Fritz sold the station to Infinity, which quickly became part of CBS Radio, which still owns the station.

When Mel Karmazin was chased out of CBS by the ghost of Edward Murrow, his “FreeFM” thing was blown up around the country.   WXYT-AM had acquired rights to the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions from ABC’s WJR-AM, and WXYT AM/FM switched to all sports, all the time  (We love sports!)

In a couple weeks, WXYT-AM will be returning to its roots and reverting to News/Talk – picking up Glenn Beck  (and an otherwise really weak lineup – Jason Lewis, Todd Schnitt, Rusty Humphries).    Mark Scott died a few years ago, so he won’t be around to yell “Excelsior!”.    Perhaps someone at the station still has a recording.’

I made a mistake that lost this comment, so rather than risk damaging the database, I’ll just repost it… from DaveW

“I well remember Mark Scott from the Detroit area. He was one of the earliest voices of Libertarian thought in Talk Radio. Now many years later, some of what he warned about has unfortunately has come to pass. He will be missed.

    Excelsior!”
