Bill Cunningham of WLW-AM and Sunday Night talk syndication begins his new TV show for Tribune TV in Chicago. It sounds like the show will be a cross between Dr Phil and Oprah.
It will be devoid of political content. The TV people are saying this is the real Bill Cunningham, not the character he plays on Radio in his theater of the mind.
Do you think that’s true?
Is there a real Bill Cunningham? Or he just a figment of his own imagination? I have tried listening to his show before, but I am capable of reading the headlines on the Drudge Report myself — I guess if I ever lose my eyesight, I can listen to Cunningham as a Drudge ‘audio version’. Show prep? What’s that?
Of course, I am just a small-minded regular guy, not a “Great American” genius like Bill.
I find Cunningham not very interesting, and I think you’ve put your finger on why. If you minimally follow the news and/or read the “right wing” web sites like Free Republic or watch Fox News, you learn nothing new from listening to Cunningham. He doesn’t seem to have the desire or ability to synthesize an original thought.
I’m not unaware that radio is show business – some hosts are more genuine than others. While I kind of like Rush, when it was discovered that he hadn’t voted in like 20 years, that spoke volumes about his real persona. While he supports gun rights, he doesn’t own one (at least he never mentions it) and I think he has mentioned he doesn’t like hunting; he is pro-family, but has no children; he supports Christianity, but doesn’t go to church; – but unlike Cunningham, he does pull together ideas and information and draw conclusions and make predictions that are usually accurate.
