The UN has declared victory over the Qaddafi government and recognized the Benghazi Council as the official government of Libya. This has a few problems:
– While Qaddaffi has left his “compound” he is not dead or in custody
– Sirte remains in control of Qaddafi forces. You can’t go on land from Bengazi to Tripoli without going through Sirte, or going through the desert. Most transit is by ship
– the Trandition Council has been unable to agree on a framework for a government
– while Qaddafi’s forces may no longer be in charge, neither is Benghazi. The “Rebels” in Misrata have different ideas about the future and refuse to follow orders from Benghazi. Gaddafi’s government was weak and decentralized, giving significant autonomy and power to the 19 tribes that live in Libya. Those tribes will not join together to support reinstalling the British Monarchy of King Idris.
Somalia, here we come…
The UN? That’s right – there are those who tout the great and numerous powers of this august body. I don’t think anyone other than leftists pay too much attention to the UN.
