Mass schedule purge today

Streaming Radio Guide is mainly used by people from Google finding well known programs – not about individual radio stations – which is confusing to people in the “Radio Biz”, and a bit threatening to egos which are rampaant in the Biz. If there are 200 stations streaming Rush Limbaugh live, there is very little reason to stream your “local” radio station to hear the show. Having 200 stations in the database only adds to the testing load for me and the volunteers – and increases the size of the database and web pages that are churned through constantly. It doesn’t add value.

About six months ago, I added something that you don’t see – what I added was the last time that any person even TRIED to listen to a particular schedule item on a specific station – like the 132nd station carrying Sean Hannity and the local weekend Informercial crap on most stations.

I just ran a purge (it’s reversible if it was a major mistake)… removing all schedule items that nobody has even tried to listen to since August 1st, 2011. That removed around 35% of all the schedule items in the database.

Note that if you’re a “volunteer”, the listening that you do does NOT update the Last Use date for the schedule item. I know I send mixed signals on this, but the objective of testing is NOT to keep every schedule item on every station “alive” forever – even when nobody actually listens to it.

Here is the list of what was purged – it’s a very interesting list as it is showing people’s actual behavior similar to what Arbitron’s PPM has found. Since I didn’t announce this when I started doing it, people did not have the opportunity to manipulate the results.

This type of purge may be incorporated permanently if it seems to work, and become a replacement for most of the current testing – doing “management by exception” rather than doing 100% inspection of everything on a regular basis.

Somehow I find it funny that the show at the top of that list is first one…must be a conspiracy. 🙂
