At least at one time, there was a web site dedicated to that, with all the court documents and news accounts. The quick version is Ted was driving drunk. He was heading back to the mainland on the last ferry. He came to an intersection – left goes to the ferry, right goes to the beach. He went straight forward. There is no straight forward, so he ran off the road. Fate being what it is, there was a constable right there – he approached the car. Ted panicked and sped off on the road toward the beach (he was not going to the beach to have sex)… Just before the beach, the road crosses bridge over a tidal inlet. He drove off the bridge into the water.
After getting out of the car, he walked past a house with a phone. The island has a diver specifically on call for situations like this. He walked all the way back to the house where the party had been. Instead of calling the police, he discussed with his lawyer friend that they needed to all agree on the story that Mary Jo had been driving. Since the constable saw a man driving the car, that wasn’t going to work. The two of them drove back to the bridge but couldn’t get her out if the car. They drove back to the ferry dock where there was a public phone. His lawyer friend left him there with the message – you’ve got to call the police and report this. Ted didn’t. He jumped in the water and swam back to the mainland and went to his hotel roon. The next morning, the car and her body were found.
