Which comes first – Islam or the Desert?

A couple years ago, I heard someone say on a radio show the implication that wherever Islam goes, deserts follow….  a pretty dangerous thing to say.

My initial reaction is that goats and sheep are well known for causing desertification.   Does traditional Islamic / Arab animal cultivation cause deserts, or does Islam spread into lands that have become deserts?

Or neither one?
