Bob Pitmann is all about selling brand and identity.
A small quirk that I picked up on a while back – while iHeartRadio has radio in the name of the player, when you use the Clear Channel player it takes you to iheart.com – there is no radio in the domain name.
So down the road, iheart could include iheart ice cream, iHeart Footbal, iheart chocolate.
Long before the arrival of Bob Pitmann, Bain Capital and Thomas H Lee made it clear they had no desire to be in the “Radio” business.. Clear Channel is a company that delivers programming content, and radio is just one way they deliver that content.
Following the last meeting of the NAB folks, Pittman became the defacto pied piper that was going to lead Radio to the promised land with his optimistic view of the future of radio. Look out, cliff ahead.
These must be the same monkey’s that sell the snake oil marketing scheme to program managers, “you need to get rid of that call sign mumbo jumbo, nobody remembers a station by call sign” Dorks.
WTQR In Winston Salem NC has been WTQR since, well ever since I can remember picking it up at a little over 90 miles by way crow flies, with my old mans Channel Master AM/FM receiver. It was a nice one too. Had that heavy fly-wheel feel to the tuner knob.
I climbed up on the roof and swung the TV antenna South /SE and woe-nellie. There was WTQR, never heard them before. That was 1977. There was some Greensboro stations too I could get, but don’t remember them. WTQR came in the best and they went by WTQR, until 2011.
Now they are Q-104 (what the hell is that?)
There is the Cat and Kat, The Wolf, The Big Dawg, The Gator, there is probably a Moose somewhere. A whole menagerie on the radio & Steve FM ?
Call letters and location city at top of the hour, that’s not asking too much is it?
I missed that. Wish I had that Channel Master receiver.
Do you all e-file your taxes ? Wife says times are changing faster and faster.
oh well
