Conservatives win majority in Canada

The Canadian votes handed the Conservative party a decisive majority, meaning it won’t have to operate as a coalition or as a minority government. The NDP party (the far left party) will be the official opposition and the Liberal party will be mostly be occupied with managing the office supplies.

Do you think this Conservative Party sweep in Canada has any correlation to last November’s elections in the U.S.?

I’m no longer within range of a CBC TV station so I’m not sure. My guess is it has more to do with the 2008 U.S. election. For as long as I’ve had contact with Canadians, the most common thing they want to talk about at the slightest invitation is the U.S. health care system and how it sucks and we should become like Canada. Be careful what you wish for.

I suspect indiscriminate immigration policy may also becoming an issue – the sharia law issue popped up in Canada a number of years ago. Canada has always struggled with “What does it mean to be a Canadian” and that question is getting more and more difficult to answer.

The economic dominance of the provinces / territories with the oil sands may also be a factor as a tug of war between the East and West. People in Edmonton are probably not happy to see “their” money going to Ontario to build yet more European style high rise social welfare slums for immigrants from Asia and the Middle East. Alberta voted 66% for the Conservatives in essentially a 3 way race

Poking around in the news, it looks like a signficant part of this was the collapse of the political block in Quebec who want their own French identity and their shift to the NDP but it wasn’t nearly enough to empower the NDP.

I thought Stephen Harper was on the ropes (to hear it from the Canadian press)?

From what I gather the “Conservatives” of Canada are no more impressive than the Republicans here in the US. (i.e. they favor a slightly smaller version of Big Brother than their Liberal & NDP opponents)

However, I find it HILARIOUS that the media in Canada has been HYPING the NDP as “surging” ever since the election cycle started. Even going so far as to wonder aloud if Jack Layton would be the new PM of a coalition government, with the Conservatives being relegated to opposition status.

I guess the Maple Leaf version of hope and change had the hype but not the Soros/Google/GE/Facebook cash that Obama had.

Maybe Layton should have tried losing his birth certificate?
