Why Nationalism can be a “good thing”

Here is a news story detailing how New York State is massively losing residents and tax dollars as people flee the state

A few days ago, someone posted a comment about a book they’re reading about the role of the “Nation State” in history and what the role of individual nations will be in the future – are they an idea whose time has run out and should we all just submit to a one world global government?    The United States was a pioneer in creating a single country that combined 13 “States” into a single country based on a common set of ideas, not ethnic identity or religious creed.

Turning the Socialist Dialectic on its creators, a monolithic single world government would be a *really bad idea*.   Having a monoculture doesn’t turn out well – if some aspect begins to fail, it can take the entire organization with it as there are no “firewalls” to protect the problem from spreading and nowhere to “go”.

The classic example used to promote diversity and multiculturalism is what happened to grape vines in France.   Following the introduction of an invasive aphid pest (Phylloxera) from North America, it quickly devastated the vineyards of Europe as the vines had no resistance to the pest.  The only reason that French grape vines survived is a program of grafting French grape vine cuttings to root stocks from American grape vines that have a natural resistance to the pest – a practice that continues to this day.

Having 50 states with competing ideas about the role and scope of what government should do acts as a deterrent from states like California and New York from going “out of control” by spending recklessly, taxing too much, viewing their role to transfer wealth around to make things, fair, and the like.   If a State gets in the position that the costs (economic and otherwise) of living there exceed the benefit, people leave – which ultimately forces the States to adjust their politics and moderate their behavior.  Eventually the bills come due.   “Federalizing” the problem by infusing money into failed states is only delaying the necessary reforms and increasing the chance the entire country will fail.

In the same way, having Nations with competing economies, different religions, different systems of education, different attitudes about how resources are used, different ideas about families and children, the role of government in the running of the country – provides a check on the excesses of one or more nation-states.    Combining nation states together that don’t share a common vision of their destiny or forcing a common view on them – can result in wide economic collapse and possibly even active wars when something goes wrong – something Greece may trigger when it votes on June 17th to give the finger to the rest of Europe and dare them to try to collect on their loans.

One of the mantras of the globalists is that “Economic Interdependence prevents wars”
