I detect a pattern.
G. Gordon Liddy was of course the guy deeply involved in the Watergate breakin and the one guy who went to prison rather than rat out Richard Nixon. Mr Liddy firmly believes at this point that Howard John Dean, rather being the guy with a conscience who cared about doing what was right, had organized the breakin in order to retrieve information about his wife being part of a prostitution ring run by the Democrats and had nothing to do with anything Richard Nixon cared about, but when caught, Nixon made the mistake of covering for the people involved rather than having them prosecuted.
Liddy has been doing a radio show for as long as I’ve had the directory, syndicated by a curious outfit called Radio America, that is owned by the American Studies Center, a non-profit Washington DC lobbying group that generally advocates for more government spending on Veterans. Roger Hedgecock and Todd Schnitt are also syndicated by Radio America.
I remember G Gordon Liddy saying that he would do the show up until the day he died. According to my math he is 81 years old. One of the long running features of his show is the annual “Stacked and Packed” calendar, featuring “hot” women (mainly his show producer) in bathing suits holding high powered weapons. This calendar created some “issues” with people on the religious right and it appears he stopped doing it a few years ago.
My count (which only includes those stations that stream) is he is on 6 radio stations, only one of which airs the entire show live (plus he is carried by CRN). The past few times I’ve listened, it was clear he is slowing down – he may have the Will to keep doing the show, but the Ability is another matter. Mrs Liddy died in 2010, and it is not uncommon for men with long term successful marriages to lose interest in life when their spouse dies.
Liddy wil be replaced by Peter Schiff, who already has a show on Radio America. Shiff is one of those “the sky is falling, buy gold quick” guys.
Second to last paragraph – amen. God be with you Mr. Liddy.
Liddy has indeed slowed down since Mrs Liddy passed on. She stuck with him through his imprisonment and kept the family together in his absence. I think he felt forever indebted to her for that loyalty. I listened to Liddy’s show when it first began back in 1992, I never heard him sound down or depressed except in the span following his wife’s death. He just never has recovered from that.
One correction to Art’s comments above: it was John Dean (not Howard Dean) that Liddy believed was the “weasel” in the Nixon White House. Liddy always believed that Dean was somehow involved but never had the proof. In 1991 two journalists wrote a book called “Silent Coup” that opened his eyes. Liddy credits their investigative work with exposing the truth behind the Watergate affair. It is a very interesting read and a plausible theory for what actually happened. I remember when Liddy interviewed the authors on his show. They would discuss some aspect of the scandal and Dean’s involvement, at which point Liddy would say “I never knew that” but then express that he now understood what Dean was up to.
Best wishes to Mr Liddy. I didn’t always agree with his beliefs or actions but I do believe that he loves his country and wants what is best for us. At one point in the mid-1990’s I thought his show was the best on talk radio — he was especially entertaining when providing news commentary during the Clinton years.
Haha….. It’s easy to get the Dean Brothers confused at this time of the morning.
I’m pretty sure I heard the same show, and the small amount of press the authors of that book got. There was like no chance in hell anyone in Establishment Media was going to entertain their narrative – the “Truth” was well established by then.
Once in a while, Liddy would talk about his time in prison, and it affected his opinions pretty profoundly about law enforcement and incarceration. He had worked for the FBI and likes to tell the stories from that era. he’s about the polar opposite to Rush Limbaugh in terms of his life. There is a lot to admire about him and never in my wildest fantasy could I be anything close the man he is.
Totally unrelated, this morning I read a story about the DOJ fighting to continue to keep the contents of those wiretaps under seal under the idea that since they were obtained illegally, they can never be disclosed. Weird, when Democratic Party activitistss just “randomly” happened to record a cell phone conversation from Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich to which they weren’t a party, which was blatantly illegal, that “standard” didn’t seem to apply.
I often listen to G Gordon, because of: his calm, level headed, even keel personality; his well informed guests (of the scientific, government, and social science persuasions); and his occasional discussions of engines, cars, and motorcycles, slightly technologically misguided though they might occasionally be. I just instinctively feel he is trustworthy. I will miss his contributions, and will obtain the book cited above.
Mr. Liddy introduce me to the Washington Times. His novel was good, the nonfiction was better. God Bless you Mr. Liddy and your family. Who ever would have guessed the path you created when you first picked up Mr. Hoover’s badge.
I’ve been listening to Mr. Liddy off-and-on since the 90’s. His breadth of knowledge and experience really make his show unlike anything else. I remember him discussing the history of the Bible with a guest. Of course the next minute he might be selling his girly calendars. He has enough knowledge of science, history, and politics to keep up on most subjects, and while I don’t always agree with him, his ideas are clearly and bluntly stated and usually compelling. With all of the unique voices going away now and in the next couple years, I just hope there is young talent to take their place.
