Hey Art: what plays a .M3u file ? It looks like the Salem media ( ding-dongs) dropped the Liquid compass ?
My computers, OS is Windows server 2003 wants to open it with Windows media player, but it can’t. Is there something else I need for .m3u files ?
Thanks!

M3u is an mp3 playlist, but that’s kind of misleading. MP3 has patent claims from a company in Germany – so what they tend to be is AAC or AAC+
The file type that Windows Media Player won’t deal with is .pls (shoutcast playlist) – Mucrosoft and AOL (which own Shoutcast and Winamp) have a long standing grudge match – WMP can play MP3/AAC streams and the pls and m3u formats are mostly similar.
If it’s an AAC+ stream and you have a really obsolete version of WMP, you might need the AAC+ plugin. Alternatively you could install Winamp or iTunes
Has anyone else been able to connect to any of the Salem Broadcast stations now that they have went away from Liquid compass?
I still seem to be unable to play any of their stations anymore.

If you go to their web site, does it work?
I choose m3u playlists if a station has a choice, since that is the most universal format – they’ll play natively on an iPhone/pad or wireless radio without special software.
The various players – Windows Media Player, Real Player, Quicktime,Winamp, iTunes… Will fight for control of the various file types (.pls, .m3u, .mp3, .wma) – when installing a new player, don’t just blast through those setup questions – some default to grabbing as many types as they can. If you later uninstall the program, it may not return that stream type to the original player and leave it broken.
The solution is to go to the player you want to use and look in the options or preferences for the list of File Types it knows how to play – tell the program it is in charge and let it take control.
For m3u, I use Winamp Lite (Winamp.com). WMP doesn’t play .pls playlists. Once in a while a station will set up a ,m3u playlist but then tell it to play an aspx stream (WMP). That’s an error – it will play on WMP but the other players don’t know what to do.
My Windoze box is back up as of today, so I can do real testing again.
Salem is a moving target – the StreamTheWorld links no longer work. They’ve been moved to the player that force feeds you streaming video ads. About half a doze are currently broken.
Hey Art: It’s not your links, It’s salem media, I can play other non-salem stations with .M3U files and blogtalk radio M3U files.
Its like Salem media has lost their mind. KNTH Houston has a stream that works and WGTKA Louisville, WWRC War-shing-ton, & WDTK Detroit works. Interesting to note, these that are working are not .M3U files that I can tell.
Those that seem to be having site issues wntp, WGKA &KRLA . Crazy.
Your site is fine Art, like you said salem is a moving target. LOL You really only need one salem site working, since most are alike.
WWRC says they boosted their transmit power, they didn’t say how much.

Several of their sites – mostly “the Fish” – have no working stream. Triton may be taking over their web sites as well
If you aspire to become an FCC geek, there is a list of their FCC apps here

They just got approval to put in something unusual – an auxiliary AM antenna. It’s a little like an FM repeater but more tricky. WBZ and a few other stations used to try this. You add a second transmitter inside your service contour to cover some area better than your existing antenna. They are adding the auxiliary on the tower for WAVA.
With two signals on the same frequency from different directions, it is very hard to make it work correctly. The carrier waves have to be precisely synchronized or it just creates new areas where the signals cancel each other out or if the carrier frequencies are just slightly different you’ll get a beating sound like an out of tune piano note.
I see they just submitted another construction permit. They’re really trying hard to boost their 0.7% market share. It is to increase daytime power from 25kw to 35kw – but it hasn’t been approved yet
