This update on G Gordon Liddy’s retirement adds in a couple interesting details. Liddy’s first day on the air was as a substitute using a studio at WABC (they rent them out and the story doesn’t mention the “who”). As Rush Limbaugh got off work, he heard Liddy who was struggling with his voice, and went in the studio and helped Liddy through his first day, probably by doing most of the talking 😉
The other tidbit was that Mel Karmazin, then head of CBS/Infinity heard Liddy on the air and immediately signed him to a permanent job at WJFK. Karmazin has a nose for talent and was the guy who got Howard Stern and Don Imus in national syndication. After Viacom took over CBS, Mel left to start Sirius Satellite Radio.
Liddy was ultimately syndicated by Radio America, a peculiar DC based syndicator owned by a charity that raises money to educate people about the importance of the military and veterans.
Liddy is one badass bastard. No doubt about it, I want to be on his side in any type of fight.
