I was doing my testing thing and was testing the Tim Conway Jr show on KFI-AM in Los Angeles – he is talking with Don Barrett, who was pulled the plug in his web site, dedicated to tracking the goings on in the #2 media market in the United States.
Just one more milepost on the road that leads to…
I read Don’s column for many years. I was a subscriber for a long time. I have strong mixed feelings about its ultimate demise. It was a very long time coming (Don started talking about “the end” about a decade ago), so not a surprise. In short, there are myriads of blogs out there in niches that make money, many without a subscriber base. That should tell you something about the owner.
I hadn’t bumped into it until now, which probably says even more – stipulating that I have never lived in California.
During the show, he mentioned that now that he would have more time, he would go on a honeymoon – he was married in September.
Just in my brief listen, he reminds me of Robert Feder in Chicago – a gadfly who made a career from burrowing into the radio business and then using that influence to try to force radio stations to program what he wanted – crossing over the line from reporter to advocate. Back in the day, a number of local radio people had contracts paying over a million a year.
There may be some rafio industry gadfly with similar clout in New York, but I can’t think of anyone.
Looking up the definition of gadfly, I probably qualify 😉
