Malzberg was a fixture on WABC in New York, then spent a year in exile co-hosting a morning show with a black woman in Harlem who was pretending to be a Republican, then joined the now defunct WOR radio network.
NewsMax has signed Steve for a three hr/day show on Internet TV, airing at 3-6 PM (ET), competing against Sean Hannity, Michael Medved and Rusty Humphries.
Newsmax hopes to sign up radio stations – that’s a tall order, but God is on their side (just ask them). Cumulus, Salem and Clear Channel have stove-piped their programming – going generally toward 21 hrs/day of national programming run from HQ, and a local host for 3 hrs in the morning (who may be doing the local show actually from 1000 miles away) and dropping syndicated products from other companies. The number of stations not owned by Big Radio is shrinking. Since NewsMax is mostly a web site and TV program, radio station program directors would look at a competitor trying to siphon audience away from radio, not to strengthen radio. That’s on top of wondering if Newsmax TV will talk about anything other than Obama’s birth certificate.
Malzberg was listenable when he was co-hosting with Richard Bey. Once he went out on his own, every issue was either good for Israel or bad for Israel in his eyes, and he spent much of the show shouting down those that disagreed with him.
That summarizes it pretty well. Way back in the early days of streaming when he was on WABC, “Art Stone” was hanging out in the chat room and I remarked how he was “POT”ing down callers when he was having trouble refuting their point of view and that made him sound scared.
As it turns out, that is an optional feature on software used to produce talk shows – to have the caller’s audio muted whenever the host is speaking, allowing the host to completely talk over the caller.
That date sounds right. I’m mulling how I want to deal with Internet streams / podcasts of people who used to be on radio (if they don’t land any affiliates)
I understand that Steve will be starting on Feb. 17. Is that correct? I rather enjoy his shows. He has done a fine job on the many shows for which he has been filling in for the hosts on vacation.
