Why I removed Conservative Talk from the directory

Got your attention?

Maybe a year ago, I split apart “Conservative Talk” stations – stations with 12+ hours a day of syndicated conservative talk stations from those with more varied talk programming. With all of the changes in syndication, this isn’t really all that helpful (maybe never was)…

So I’ve merged Conservative Talk back in with “Regular” news/talk.

At least for now, so called “Progressive” talk and “Black” talk have their own category still

All this means is if you have Conservative talk bookmarked or saved to your cookies, you’ll want to re-bookmark it or reselect the format back to a value of “1”

… just when I was going to ask for a new section called “Libertarian talk”… just now’s not the time. 🙂

Ah, the source of much confusion 😉 Station format vs programming category…

This was a change to station formats, not programming categories. While there are a few Libertarian programs (Free Talk Live, Larry Elder), I’m not aware of any stations with an FCC license that are primarily Libertarian. If there was such a thing, the probably would refuse to have an FCC license.

So if I want to collect all the conservative stuff I would select ‘station type’ = news/talk,
then ‘show type’ = political opinion, correct?

    • Art Stone says:

      Yes.

This is a long standing and unsolvable problem. Stations have formats, shows belong to a category. Often they are aligned, but not always.

The example I like to use is Don Imus. His show is primarily a political talk show, although people seem confused that a liberal could live on a ranch and like guns. However, his show is primarily heard on stations whose station format is sports or country music.

Glenn Beck’s religious program is primarily heard on secular news/talk stations.

Two complaints so far this morning

A few questions that I would value your feedback on:

Mike Savage says that all the other so-called Conservatives on talk radio are fake Conservatives – is he right? Do I need a category for True Conservatives and Fake Conservatives? Which does Savage belong in?

If a “conservative” station carries Alan Colmes for 3 hours a day, does that disqualify them from being a Conservative station?

Is Herman Cain a Conservative or a Libertarian? Is WSB-AM a Conservative station?

  4. WesternMA says:

Regardless of what Michael Savage says, “true conservative” is a subjective term. If he feels he belongs in that category, I think only his listeners could make the distinction. If you were to classify him as a true conservative, at his whim, wouldn’t you then be elevating his status?

As for Alan Colmes being carried on a conservative talk station, I don’t think it would disqualify the station from being called conservative because I consider Colmes more comic relief.

Herman Cain is a Libertarian, but the station is not.

  5. Nidster says:

I really do not hear Savage taking “true conservative” positions. I put him in the “classic complainer” classification. I listen to him sometimes and think he has a few good moments and a few good ideas.

Savage definitely goes into the “Book Peddling” category.
