The Y chromosome – the one that makes a person male – is passed on identically from father to son as by definition it contains no DNA from the mother. That means if you look at the genetic markers, you can back track accurately male lineage for 1000s of years.
Every once in a while small mutations happen and that male lineage splits into two branches. By comparing lots of samples, scientists can build an evolutionary tree backward through time.
According to this story, a genetic test came back with the Y chromosome matching no known sample of human DNA. When they broadened the search, they discovered it did match Neanderthal DNA. The implication is that some Africans are descendants of sex between an early human and a pre-human ancestor. When they broadened it to a world side search, a dozen or so people in Cameroon show the same DNA, but DNA studies in Africa are not so widespread. In the US, we’ve been building a database for use by law enforcement. If you leave sperm at a crime scene, you’re telling them your last name, as long as your daddy really was your daddy and you carry his last name.
Ouch. I want to hear Al Sharpton explain why he is working for such a racist organization. They are literally saying that some Africans are only partially human.
