A coworker and I were discussing computers and how much they’ve grown in influence, that we barely know what they are doing any more, even though we programmed them. I mentioned the 1970 movie “Colossus: The Forbin Project” and he hadn’t seen it.

It’s jarring to see how much the world has changed. Richard Nixon was President, the Vietnam war was still on the nightly news, we had just landed on the moon. There were only 3 TV networks, AT&T wasn’t broken up – it would be almost another 10 years before people could buy their own personal computers.

Dow Futures are down 100 points to 14,333 as I write this. How many readers have brokerage account, mutual fund accounts, IRA accounts, 401k accounts, FSAs, HSAs, college saving accounts… any account with a monthly balance in a computer?
The US is doing the same thing, just on the installment plan – funding the FDIC by a stiff surcharge on bank deposits – keeping interest rates close to zero while inflation ticks up. Same game, we just are more clever at hiding it cause we own the electronic printing press.
