Random angry young men running around with a device that can easily shoot down a civilian airliner.   Surprise, Surprise, Surprise.   Now that was unexpected.

      I wonder how far they can push this before the anti-colonial resentment makes NATO the target instead of Gaddafi – the fact that everyone is ignoring Syria can’t be going unnoticed.

      Qaddaffi being a secular government (he was a stooge of the Soviet Uniom after all, which was officially atheist) is probably an important factor for Saudi Arabia. Beyond the oil and gas, I think the US and England are motivated by wanting to rebuild air force bases in the area.
