Health Care CYA in full force

Here is the disclaimer from ConnectiCare, a company that issues individual policies in Connecticut. Read it carefully :

Rates are subject to Department of Insurance approval. In addition, rates and benefits are subject to change based on any state or federal mandate or other regulatory requirements that are imposed at any time after the policy is effective and which materially affect the existing rates. Actual monthly premiums are based on final enrollment.

So what they’re saying is if I apply now and agree to get my insurance from them, they may change my rates at any time between now and January 1st, and any time during the coming year – to deal with Obama’s rule by decree.

I’m not saying I would do anything different, but this is the next chapter. You can’t get an actuary to make an accurate estimate if you don’t know what the rules are or they could change on a moment’s notice because the President makes an announcement on TV.

That’s right. If the healthy people are allowed to keep their policies and stay in the pool that excluded people with existing conditions, then the pool of sick people on the exchange will have to pay a greater share of their costs and not ride on the back of the healthy people.

I don’t want to sound mean, but people need to understand it for what it is. If you don’t believe me, you can believe President Obama and his promise that everyone will see a $2,500 annual reduction in their insurance costs and that people that still can not afford that will get a subsidy on the back of taxpayers. He sold the hope, but is having trouble selling the change.

Now the “playing stupid” starts – read this response from BC/BS of Vermont to the President

They think “You can keep your old policy” means that you can keep it in force for 3 extra months until the end of the 2014 enrollment period.

VT has no real competition – the only other company is a small one from NY. New Hampshire has no other company beyond Anthem Blue Cross/Shield.

“The state of Vermont is confident that the State’s current options plan will meet the coverage needs of Vermonters in 2014.”

Note that BlueCross BlueShield of Vermont does not offer its opinion on the issue, but instead notes the opinion of the state of Vermont without comment.
