Quinn & Rose are gone

Quinn & Rose’s show was produced by WPGB-FM, the Clear Channel News Talk station in Pittsburgh, PA. They were carried on a handful of affiliates in the general area of Western Pennsylvania and more importantly to most listeners were on SiriusXM.

Clear Channel recently sold their ownership interest in XM (which they helped found) and by doing so gave up their right to program channels on XM.

Given the politics of Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman, I predicted at the time that Q&R’s days were numbered without the national audience to protect them.

A reliable listener says that Friday’s show started out very weird and was replaced by a best of show. Friday is often when shows are given the axe. The WPGB-FM web site has been scrubbed of Q&R references which is strong evidence that they’re gone.

Warroom.com is owned by Jim Quinn, not Clear Channel, but contains no hint of what is going on. It’s also possible they quit rather than being fired.

In unrelated news, Premiere has reached an agreement to extend Randi Rhodes’ contract for another year.

In other unrelated news, the FCC voted 5-0 to end the rule limiting foreign ownership of radio & TV stations to 25%, so the real owners of Clear Channel can now come out of the shadows.

It can happen here, and is.

In a statement, a Clear Channel spokesperson said “WPGB tried to reach new terms with Jim Quinn and Rose Tennent, but as that was unsuccessful, they will be moving on and we support and thank them for the contributions they have made to Clear Channel Media + Entertainment’s WPGB over the years.”

Interesting choice of words – “reach new terms”. My guess of what that means is that since they were no longer on SiriusXM, they were offered a huge pay cut or the door.

Maybe they’ll show up on TRN 😉

Yes, it seems whenever the phrase ‘couldn’t reach new terms’ or something related is used, it usually means ‘it was a good time for us to turf the pains in the butts’…I suppose they’ll show up somewhere.

I tried not to listen to them. I’d rather listen to Bill Bennett. Quinn could say some intersting things, but for a guy who spent a lifetime in radio, you wouldn’t know it. He keeps stopping and starting sentences, usually three times. You could compress a three hour show into one hour, if he could say something on the first try. He was often vulgar, and Rose is just an opportunistic broad.

    • Art Stone says:

Quinn is 70 years old whuch might explain some of it. Most people probably know that he and Rush Limbaugh both worked at KQV-AM in Pittsburgh near the end of AM stations playing rock music.

On a personal level, I have issues with Rose mixing politics and her Catholic religious value system. She attends the catholic church about 3 blocks from where I grew up. I was the only non-catholic child on the block and their parents told their children not to play with non-Catholics. The most ironic thing is one of the Irish Catholic fathers called me “little Hymie” when nobody was around. He incorrectly assumed we were Jewish, apparently.

He might not have been smart, but maybe he had a different view of a Hymie back in the 1960s:

        Enjoy.

Quinn never rode roughshod over others as much as Rose did. I am with you, Art – there are those who flaunt their religion in ways that make you wince in agony. We are all God’s children. I will miss them.

      • Little Man says:

I don’t think Rose is Catholic anymore. She said something one time about not being one. But she made a big deal about being a Christian. I really hated days like Memorial Day and other national holidays, she’d read these long soliloquies with some kind of a patriotic theme. I am as red blooded an American as anyone, if not more so. But I had to change the station. She was just too much to stomach. And Quinn may be 70, buy I have relatives in their 80’s and 90’s who do a better job of putting together a coherent sentence on the first try.

On Wednesday they mentioned something about going to a Production down in Tennessee. I think they had an offer prior to the WPGB Contract negotiations. We will see. I for one Support Quinn and Rose and I don’t give a ### what others say. Actions speak more than words… #QuinnAndRose

It is terrible. They were a fixture and did so much for vets, the military and toys for tots at this time of year. Quinn had info you only heard later on the radio or MSM.
I pray they are back. Us ‘bitter clingers’ here in Western Pennsylvania are furious.

… and speaking of satellite (how’s that segue?) , perhaps someone will propose that we spend billions to put GPS in each of the nation’s trains? lol

    Seen this comment posted at:http://rbr.com/quinn-and-rose-leave-mornings-at-wpgb/
On June 17 of this year Clear Channel announced that Nathan Daschle would become Executive Vice President for Political Strategy, effective immediately. In this new position, Daschle will develop and oversee a Washington, D.C.-based team that will focus on working with political and issue advertisers and advertising agencies to develop custom strategies and campaigns. Nathan Daschle is the son of former Dem Senate leader Tom Daschle. Nathan was also Executive Director of the Democratic Governors Association.
I believe this and the recent removal of many of Clear Channels conservative programing from Sirius XM shows what direction they intend to take.

    • Art Stone says:

Just to make it more clear, that was a comment posted by a reader, not information in the RBR article.

Quinn & Rose had a unique arrangement in their syndication was only in the Pittsburgh area and not managed by Premiere, Clear Channel’s syndication subsidiary that handles Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and (mostly) Sean Hannity.

Clear Channel sold its ownership in XM about a month ago, which is why all of a Clear Channel’s programming left SiriusXM. The loss of the national exposure probably made it impossible for WPGB to afford Q&R’s contract.
