Robert Byrd is dead. Long live ruler Obama.

Duck and Cover!
Now they should have time in the Senate to pass a budget bill

Rush’s speculation is probably correct (it’s amazing how often RL’s ‘second sight’ is correct) that the fear of being enslaved is out pacing the fear of being accused of false racism. Further news from the affronted-front and a more important -ism – it kills me to hear Baldwin roll out the old ‘some of my best friends are (pick a special interest group)’ defense.
For now, they’re only doing this for judges, excluding the Supreme Court. The Republicans tried to push the end to filibusters for SCOTUS nominees as well – for future Republican presidents.
If the rules were being followed (ie Robert Byrd was still around), the nonsense of using a simple majority vote to end a 60% requirement would not have happened. The existing rules require a 2/3 vote to make such a significant change – but rules are made to be broken.
So far, the 60% rule is still in place for normal legislation. Even though removing it could mean the express train to hell, I don’t see the filibuster as a good thing. If the people elect a majority for both houses and the President, they should get whatever they want (within the limits of the Constitution). The pendulum way start swinging wildly, but what we have now isn’t working.
