A prediction of mine since the beginning of the Obama administration is one step closer to reality. My prediction goes like this – citing budget pressures and the racial imbalance in prisons, Obama will propose a paramilitary group – possibly Americorp, maybe something else – offered as a way for people in prison to get released early – establishing a militia of really tough angry thugs answerable only to President Obama’s political operations.
The Supreme Court of California has ordered the Prison system to remove about 40,000 prisoners because of overcrowding. Governor Jerry Brown’s plan is to not release them, but push them down into local jails. That implies either that the State will have to pay the local jails for housing the criminals or that just pushes the costs down to the local governments – and interferes with their ability to safely detain suspects who haven’t yet been convicted of anything.
