A new term for your vocabulary. A yoga guru is leading a hunger strike of his followers – their demand is to clean up government corruption related to “black money”. The term generally refers to income tax evasion – there seem to be two basic issues – government employees demanding bribes to ignore tax cheats, and demanding bribes before returning tax refunds.
I spent an evening back in the 1980s with two Indians watching a Bollywood movie (no English subtitles) and trying to guess the plot. As near as I remember it, the “bad guys” were rich people who ate chicken (OMG!), and much of the plot line revolved around the police and bribery. They explained to me that the India government doesn’t have the money to pay its workers, so the only reason people want to get a government job is the access it gives to an income stream of bribe money.
