Howie was involved in a 2 car accident on the Massachusetts turnpike – he was taken to the hospital, but has already been released.
He was supposed to fill in tonight and tomorrow night for Mark Levin. Apparently that won’t be happening. I wonder if Col. Hunt will be in today for Howie; he’s always interesting but a little difficult to understand.
Any word on when the show goes national?
I got an email that said they were looking for an admin. assistant for the “new” show starting on the 17th.
I haven’t heard a peep on the syndication other than the original announcement. Since WTTK-FM doesn’t exist any more, I”m not sure where he goes from here – he may be laying the foundation for life after Boston radio. It’s a little late in his career to be starting over
I just checked my email, and I see the mailing list letter from Howie announcing the launch a week from Monday.
I know this is beating a dead horse, but syndication is not doing a local show and putting it on a satellite. Syndicated shows have a much more rigid show clock, and you have to be very careful to avoid things like mentioning the current time of day – because the show will be heard in other time zones, or may be on a delay. Because the show may be on a delay, you have to be careful about discussing breaking news or carryimhpg press conferences live – because by the time the replay happens, it’s already stale news

Let’s do a little role-playing of how one would sell this show in syndication – to pretend we call the program director of WHAS AM in Louisville Kentucky.
[ring ring]
PD: yeah?
US: Hi, is this Bill Smith, Program Director?
BS: Last time I checked. Who are you and why are you wasting my time?
US: My name is Belinda Carlisle – I called you to see if you would be interested in carrying the Howie Carr show, which starts next Monday.
BS: Who the hell is Howie Carr?
US: He’s a reporter for the Boston Herald and has done a regional radio show in New England for over 20 years
BS: does he talk funny? Most people from Boston have a weird accent, packing their caw in haavawd yawd
US: well, listeners will know he sounds like he’s from Boston, but he talks about issues of interest to everyone in America
BS: Such as?
US: President Obama
BS: Dial Global is my station’s source for syndicated programs – I don’t deal with independents who are clueless about syndication. How many minutes of local avails do I get?
US: What?
BS: You have no clue what you’re doing, am I right?
US: ummm
BS: when is the show fed live, and how many minutes of ads can I sell – can I have a copy of the show clock?
US: we’re hiring a part time assistant, and I’ll have her send you a copy
BS: will the show have hard breaks or floating breaks? What automation systems is the show compatible with? Which bird is the signal on?
US: I’ll get that information from the engineers for you when I get off the phone
BS: so you’re trying to sell me a local guy from Boston who talks funny to replace my afternoon drive host who has a 5.3 rating – and you don’t even know if the show is compatible with my automation – is that right?
US: well lots of people know him from the books he wrote about Whitey Bolger and he sometimes fills in for Mark Levin
BS: Who? Never mind – forget I asked

The deal was announced in June, yet there is nothing on their web site. The company was created a year ago by Tony Garcia, who has some experience working with the syndication of Bob & Sheri, originating from Charlotte, but now owned by Boston’s Greater Media.
The company has no track record as an independent syndicator and likely has no sales force. I think this story has a bad ending, but time will tell. I hope Howie didn’t write a check to get the deal.
