Keywords

Back around 1994, Keyword stuffing was a big deal. On the part of a web page you never see, the people who had researchy thoughts figured it would be good to tag those research papers about nuclear physics with keywords, so if you wanted to find research papers on quarks, the computer didn’t have to scan entire documents.

The idea was an index could be made, then you searched the index – a little like the card catalog at the library. [ooh, add that the list of things Millenials don’t know about]

So search engines were the natural progression, building up a list of articles matching keywords so you only had to open the ones that looked helpful. Then as the number grow, someone had to figure out which were the “best”, and the race to fool the search engines was off!

It only took about a year for all but the most foolish search engines to ignore meta keywords, but I just started adding them to the database, since titles were so useful. Can’t tell if a station is album rock or alternative? Maybe the keywords say.

Some of you probably don’t know that Jimmy Swaggart is still out raising money on TV and radio. I think the list of keywords on his web page is very instructive:

SonLife Broadcasting Network, SBN, Jimmy Swaggart, Jimmy Swaggart Ministry, Ministries, JSM, Swaggart, Family Worship Center, Evangelist, Expositor’s, Donnie Swaggart, Frances Swaggart, Francis Swaggart, Gabe Swaggart, Gabriel Swaggart, Study Bible, CD’s, DVD’s, Study Guides, Commentaries, Books, Media Church, Swaggert

The #1 mistake people make in web sites is to put their name in the title and keywords. To get visitors, you need to sell the bacon, not the package.

So what keywords would people search for and -want- to wind up at the Jimmy Swaggart SonLife Broadcasting web site? I’ll start – how about “Christian”? Can you think of a few others?

More bad news for CRN… they’re missing the keyword “AM”.

I’ll post another comment, as I’ve been in ‘SEO’ since 1995 and have seen a lot of carnage from the hacks, over-priced ‘experts’, and Google mis-info (dis-info).

‘Search’, as known until 2002-04, is gone. Google is an advertising platform (filter engine) masquerading as a search engine. e.g. For months, Google has blocked results which point to eBay listings, because eBay won’t ‘pay to play’.
