The Republican National Convention will be July 18-21 in the Quicken Loans Arena, Ohio, a basketball Arena.
The City of Cleveland is not exactly a hospitable location for Republicans. Voter registration is 43,988 Democrats and 7,074 Republican, with 197,000 not saying.
The last Republican mayor left office in 1989. The current mayor is sort of black, so is the police chief. The City Council has 17 members – 16 Democrats and one Green Party member. Cuyahoga County voted 68% for Barack Obama. The city is majority black (53.3%).
So what fool thought this would be the place to select the Republican who will replace Barack Obama?

I would like to point your attention to rule 37(e) and rule 47(d) of the 2016 Convention rules

37(e)
(e) If the Republican National Committee determines that the national convention cannot convene or is unable to conduct its business either within the convention site or within the convention city, then and only then, the roll call for nomination for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States shall be allowed to be conducted according to procedures authorized by the Republican National Committee.
47(d)
(d) When at the close of a roll call any candidate for nomination for President of the United States or Vice President of the United States has received a majority of the votes entitled to be cast in the convention, the chairman of the convention shall announce the votes for each candidate whose name was presented in accordance with the provisions of paragraph (b) of this rule. Before the convention adjourns sine die, the chairman of the convention shall declare the candidate nominated by the Republican Party for President of the United States and Vice President of the United States.
For those not versed in Latin, sine die means “without a date” – an adjournment without the RNC setting a date to continue the convention.
“Mr Chairman!”
“The chairman of the state of Florida is recognized. For what purpose does the chairman seek recognition?”
“Mr Chairman – the delegation of the state of Florida makes a motion that the convention do adjourn sine die”
“Is there a second?”
“the state of Colorado seconds the motion”
“the motion to adjourn sine die having been made and seconded, a voice vote on the motion is in order – all in favor vote aye”
Aye
“Those opposed, vote Nay”
Nay
“In the opinion of the chair, the Ayes have it. Convention is adjourned”
*Gavel pound*
“But but but…”
Curiously, the convention is not on the calendar at Quicken Arena

The choice of Cleveland was based on local sponsors committing to provide $60 million to cover the costs – don’t worry about it – we’re good for the money!

The delegates will be staying in a brand new 600 room Hilton Hotel which is currently under construction and will definitely be ready by June!

The first date rooms are available for reservations is August 3rd for a mere $299 a night…
>”The first date rooms are available for reservations is August 3rd for a mere $299 a night…”
Yeah, I would pay that much for a night in a room that didn’t have ‘pecker tracks’ in it.

So the convenient lack of lodging + a city that’s hostile to Republicans (unrest in the streets this summer?) = can’t have the convention so we’ll just nominate Romney? If we didn’t want Romney 8 years ago, or 4 years ago, what makes people think we’ll want to vote for him now?
This is America, right?
Just saw Mitt on Fox News Sunday saying he’s not “running for President”, that he “can’t forsee any circumstances” where he would. However, when Chris Wallace pressed him to declare that he wouldn’t run if nominated and wouldn’t serve if elected, Mitt said that would be “absurd”.
Yeah, Mitt. Being truthful is absurd these days, isn’t it? This is why people hate politicians.
Welcome to doublespeak – he won’t “run” but would be glad to tak a handoff…
Cleveland will have the RNC with the standard security keeping the standard 5,000 activists at bay. The city will have to pay for broken windows and looting not covered by Insurance. Cleveland is a nonsense choice, but it is the revenue that drove the efforts to get the RNC convention – estimated to be about 60-70 million.
Problems?
1) Activists – there are plenty of them. The city population of ~ 400,000 is mostly Black and Latino.
2) Parking – there isn’t any
3) Security – the Police will enforce security to the extent possible. They stopped two unarmed people (Black man and woman) by chasing them with something like 20 squad cars and eventually firing 137 rounds into their vehicle. (Note to activists: probably want to watch your physical movements as dead is dead regardless of blame).
4) There may be some damage to our new Park on Public Square – yes that is the $45 million dollar park that spans two whole city blocks. Yes – I said $45 million – these are some kick a** trees.
I wasn’t aware they planned to use the “Q” (Quicken Loans Arena). We have a perfectly wonderful underground convention center that is perfect for hosting such events(?).
I plan on being on vacation at that time. You will not be able to move safely on the streets, the buses will be interrupted for Delegate use and the parking is a disaster now – imagine those three days.
I wasn’t going to “out” you as a clevelander 😉
I understand why Cleveland wanted the convention, but baffled why the RNC chose it as the venue. I have a vague memory of John Batchelor at the time suggesting that Ohio is a “must win” state in electoral college math and the RNC figured giving the convention to Cleveland would improve the chances of Republicans winning the state.
A basketball stadium is a horrible venue. The ~2400 delegates will be seated on the floor – unlike a theater type venue, the floor will be flat. Alternate delegates will be seated up in the spectator seats, far removed from their state delegations. Nice for a TV show, horrible for a floor fight.
Trouble in paradise

The convention will need 60,000 hotel rooms. The new Hilton, if finished, is only 600. This means the organizing committee has to lock down 90% of all hotel rooms in a 35 mile radius
Fred – all hotel rooms within a 5o mile radius is more like it. I live over 30 miles from Downtown and I don’t think I could buy a hotel room for the two weeks around the Convention for love or money.
That’s probably the spillover – the RNC gets out to 35 miles, then the people who would normally be staying in Cleveland and the clingers like BlackLiveMatters will be staying in Youngstown. Food service is a other huge issue.
A little anecdote – US Foods was supplying the Democratic Party Convention in Charlotte in 2012. They ordered way too much fresh hamburger meat which the company had to take back. Who would have guessed Democrats are vegans?
Alex Jones said he is having to pay $1000 a night to put his people in a place that is half an hour drive from downtown. I wonder if he knows there is nowhere to park downtown.
The mayor of Cleveland wants to raise the City Income tax from 2 to 2.5 percent. Having a city income tax is one of the ways Cleveland is similar to Detroit and Flint.
How many of those cities have a “gross revenue” tax? It is a way to make business pay the city even when they have no profits and is a reason that the streets surrounding Philadelphia have all the shopping centers. Food desert, anyone?
Of course, “the people” don’t pay a gross receipts tax, only the greedy white corporations.
Only slightly related, Sheridan Broadcasting has just dragged itself into bankruptcy.

Cumulus Media is having its earning call on Thursday. The stock is up 18% today when the market is down.
US Steel is down 10% and announced it will idle its tubular steel facility in Lorraine Ohio, which makes pipe for wells and pipelines.

Better lucky than smart.
Regarding those greedy white corporations, just 30 minutes south of Philadelphia is the state of Delaware where the welcoming sign says “Welcome to Delaware, home of tax free shopping” . Delaware has no sales tax, but it has a cross receipts tax that is equal to the sales tax in surrounding states. …
The result is that total price you pay is basically the same, but you don’t see your receipt showing a separate sales price and sales tax line item.
The interesting twist is when you do buy from “the greedy white corporations” rather than a mom’n’pop. The GWCs often have national sales, think refrigerators and televisions for example, that are the same list price nationwide. There is makes sense for Philadelphians to drive the 30 minutes into Delaware… but only before checking the fine print that may sometimes say “prices not valid in Alaska, Hawaii, or Delaware” . 🙂
Who pays list price for a refrigerator?
A lot of details how Cleveland won

In 2014, Congress stripped out Federal funding of the conventions (other than security). The fund raising committee in Dallas in 2012 failed to raise enough money, forcing Romney to cover the deficit
The evidence is starting to pile up that the choice was driven by the Olympics being in early August. The Republicans decided to move their convention to mid July which creates conflicts in many cities with the possibility of an NBA team needing the facility and the hotel rooms. The RNC needs 6 weeks to build the Stage for the TV show.
At the time, the Cleveland Cavaliers were going nowhere, but ended up going to the finals in 2015. Right now the Cavs have the best win-loss ration in the Eastern Conference. Last year, the finals ended June 16th, and could have lasted one more game. NBA finals are played at the venues of the teams, not a neutral 3rd city.
yeah, pass on the Cleveland OH , even though it supposedly rocks. My wife was going to interview at Case western Reserve University for a job. But we had research the area, you would have to live way out and commute in. Thats not much fun.
I didn’t want to move to Ohio, less days riding motorcycles.
we passed on it, it was last year. After reading what Briand75 wrote, good decision.
I might be convinced to move to Rock Hill SC, : )

Cleveland Cavaliers have won, creating a problem getting the Quicken Arena ready in time for the convention
Cleveland won game 5 Monday night, which means a lot of overtime for carpenters and electricians. Game six is in Cleveland later this week. Republicans needed 6 weeks to build out the convention. They’ll get four
