PSA award

StreamingRadioGuide’s annual award for worst PSA advice goes to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Among the advice they offer is to keep a white rag in your trunk to tie onto your car’s radio antenna in the event your car breaks down.

A prior award went to a FEMA PSA stating that granalo bars are a horrible survival food.

Interesting. I have a little stub on the roof which I believe is the radio antenna. I wouldn’t be able to tie anything to it 🙂

The last car I remember having a radio antenna was my 1962 Plymouth Valiant, It didn’t have a radio at all, so I bought one at a junkyard and had to drill a hole in the fender. That made my parents a little nervous, but it turned out OK

After doing a little reading today, I think a part of the “death of AM radio” can be blamed on poor AM antennas in cars. To the extent cars are steel, the antenna needs to be outside the “faraday cage”. FM and Sirius XM need only a little pointy thing or maybe a wire on the inside of the back window. High end cars may still have electric AM antennas, but they break a lot in places with ice. Damn kids breaking off antennas on devil’s night…

Yes. I remember as kids we did a lot of stupid things – one was breaking antennas. The others included eggs, shaving cream and spooking other kids. If we only knew what a pain it was to replace an antenna…
