Vin Scully to retire

Vin is one of the last baseball announcers who made the transition from radio to TV, along the likes of Red Barber, Bob Prince, Mel Allen, Harry Caray, Ernie Harwell… Vin is 88 – Holy Cow!

NY Times coverage

I grew up listening to Bob Prince of the Pittsburgh Pirates – he totally understood that radio is different than TV. He would describe the smell of the grass, the wind direction, the temperature, how briskly the flags were flapping, the behavior of the crowd, the appearance of the players – and remembered details of games from 20 years ago without needing Wikipedia. Nerdy young boys would talk at school about “Did you listen to KD last night?” (KDKA-AM)

In those days, a flippant remark like “hey, let’s walk to Washington (PA) this weekend” could wind up with 20,000 people showing up, and no transportation to get them back home ?? (See Rege Cordic)

One Response to Vin Scully to retire

  1. Parrott says:

Wow, another end of an era. He sure has a distinctive voice very smooth.
Jack Buck had a distinctive voice too, you could always pick them out. Only a few reach that level.
