I passed along an important “fact” without double checking it, so I’m circling back to make sure I was not echoing misinformation. I said his father was the first black detective in Charlotte’s police department.
Brentley went to Liberty University to study criminal justice. Liberty University should ring a bell – it is the Jerry Falwell University in Virginia. He was on the football team and wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He graduated in 2012 and was hired by the CMPD in 2014.
The CNN story says they tried to talk to his dad, Alex Vinson – who they identified as a retired Charlotte police officer.
Here is dad’s web site
http://www.vinsonpi.com/?q=about
Which mentions he was in the US Army and has 27 years in law enforcement. Dad votes regularly and is a Democrat. He lives in Ballantyne, which is an area that is on the far south side and atypically is a black middle class neighborhood – curiously the new 12th district map – not based on race – goes out its way to connect Ballantyne to the North Side
It´s confirmed at the bottom of this 2012 article. http://www.newsadvance.com/archives/vinson-delivers-vicious-hits-on-field-mild-mannered-demeanor-off/article_0ef824fe-1409-5623-9cd2-29eb68dcc231.html
Other stories are saying the son is a registered Republican from NC Public Voting Records.
I didn’t want to look up the son 😉 they probably are a little sensitive at the moment
When I saw the picture of Vinson, he doesn’t look like a football player, although faith can go a long way.
There was a guy who played football in a non-NFL league in Charlotte named Reggie “Super knat” Smith with a similar build. He was very small for a football player, but was a fast runner. He annoyed the hell out of the 300 pound players who could not catch him. Reggie was eventually recruited by the NFL, but his career was short. It doesn’t take much for an annoyed defensive player to destroy your knee and career
