The actual people arrested in Charlotte

No, they were not out of state paid George Soros agitators. The FOP guy was lying to CNN. Unformately Zerohedge and Drudge picked this up and it is bouncing like crazy around the right wing nut-o-sphere.

People accused of a crime are presumed innocent until they have been convicted by a jury

Now having looked over the crowd, at least those too slow to run away, I come down mostly on the side “police overreaction”. I would like to quote from the US Constitution

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petitition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

I read when I got home on Wednesday that there was going to be a protest march at Trade And Tryon at 5:30 PM. I don’t remember seeing if there was any organizer involved (could have been BLM). It seemed like an accommodation to let people express their anger in an appropriate way. The group was almost all local people with little or no criminal record. They were greeted by a phalanx of police in riot gear from the 2012 Convention. Bottles and rocks were thrown, police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, but in the end very little actually happened.

There is a definite theme of what was targeted by the crowd. My suspicion is the “show of force” was demanded by the Visitor and Conventions Bureau, which is the defacto government of Uptown. Time Warner Arena (being renamed as the Charter Cable Arena) is owned by the city. The Hornets merchandise store had stuff looted. The windshield on a city bus was broken, but the bus was not burned or set on fire. The NASCAR hall of fame had some windows hit with rocks, but the glass was shatterproof. The hall of fame is a financial disaster being propped up by the visitor’s bureau and the city. Two of the high end hotels seemed to be a focus of attention, but then again, nothing was burned down, no police cars overturned, a few windows broken – a few really stupid people breaking stuff for CNN

The curfew remains in effect until the state of “emergency” is lifted or the mayor withdraws the curfew. As of this afternoon, she said it will remain in place

In summary, only one person out of 43 arrested traveled from out of state to come to Charlotte

    He was arrested for praying.

The woman from Georgia is a student at Duke Niversity
