This is from 2009 in rural New York state. EMF (the Air1/KLove people) put a 3 kW antenna on an existing tower, and the nearby neighbors started reporting health problems. 3kW is a “Class A” FM license, the weakest type of FM license other than LPFM or FM translators.
The local building code enforcement government dumbass shows up and tells the TV station that he’s going to Shut the Station Down!!! with no actual evidence to back up the claims – the report the homeowner handed the TV station was repudiated by the company who supposedly did the radiation study – “We didn’t write that”.
They yanked enough chains in Washington DC that the FCC did an emergency analysis and found that the station was in complete compliance.
You’ll notice there is a lot more on that tower than a 3 kW FM antenna – thanks to my magic new feature, here is a list of what’s on that tower:
Sprint/Nextel cell phone transceiver
MCI 6 gHz microwave relay
Niagara Mohawk Power 1.905 gHz transmitter
One of the comments mentions that the guy’s dish antenna is pointed right at the tower, which could explain why his TV is a bit ummm…. drowned out. I don’t see what the comment is talking about.
This station was carrying the short-lived “God’s Country” music format – it was a hybrid between Country music and Southern Gospel.

EMF sent people out to help deal with the problems and found defective line splitters and other things that can pick up nearby RF signals and cause interference to TV and radios. RF cannot make noises in computer speakers unless something nearby is rectifying the RF and radiating the signal – like a piece of metal that is about the same length as the wavelength of the signal but isn’t properly grounded.
Some of the people in the area refused to allow EMF’s engineers to enter their houses to fix their problems. I guess that might weaken the case for the “your FM station made my dog pregnant!” lawsuits.
Chaos. I bet their 401k is gone now.
